Crews called to church roof fire
By Gurpreet Samrai
EASTER celebrations were brought to a halt on Sunday after a fire at a church in Old Windsor.
The fire at St Peter and St Andrew Church in Church Road, Old Windsor, began in the church roof due to an electrical fault at 7am on Sunday morning.
Windsor fire-fighters were first at the scene and were later assisted by Slough fire-fighters.
Around 20 square metres of the roof have been affected and badly damaged. However, fire-fighters were able to save and remove most of the valuable items from the church.
Crew Manager, Neil Armstrong, said: “They were very grateful that Windsor night watch were still open and managed to get there so quickly and save as much as they did. If a crew had arrived later if could have been a lot worse.”
The Easter service was scheduled to begin at 10.30am, but had to be moved to a nearby church.
The church is now working on getting the roof fixed as quickly as possible as weddings are booked from May onwards.
