Road strips row rumbles on
'RUMBLE strips’ designed to slow down speeding traffic are giving residents sleepless nights.
The yellow strips were renewed outside houses on Uxbridge Road, Iver Heath, in February, after Bucks County Council completed junction alterations at Billet Lane and Uxbridge Road, as part of a casualty reduction scheme.
Geoff Bennett, who has lived on the road for about 30 years, said the strips are inappropriate in a residential area, and he has now written to the leader of the council, David Shakespeare, asking for them to be removed.
Mr Bennett, 59, said: “They were originally put down about 15-20 years ago as it was a 70mph limit and people kept hitting the roundabout.
‘They reduced the speed limit to 40mph and have put in an interactive sign. The strips were not doing anything because they had ceased to exist after 20 years. They had worn away and we did not notice it.”
Now the strips have been renewed Mr Bennett, an
estimator for a building company, says he has difficulty sleeping.
He said: “I’m not getting any sleep. If I manage two or three hours that is as good as it gets. I work freelance and I find I have no concentration at all.
“We get a lot of lorries coming out of Slough and the noise of them is incredible.
“For us the only possible outcome is to have the strips removed. They are not serving any purpose.”
Mr Bennett and his neighbours met with local area
transport coordinator Chris Schwier on February 5, who said he would investigate further.
Mr Schwier said: “The issue is being looked at.
“These lines were put in when it was a national speed limit and we are currently checking with the Department for Transport to see whether there is a
requirement for the lines to remain.”
