Fresh and green is what Morrisons has in store

FRESH LOOK: The design for the first purpose-built Morrisons store to open in the town.
THIS is an exclusive glimpse at what Morrisons first supermarket in Slough could look like if it is given the go-ahead to build on the controversial old Co-op site.
The artist’s impressions were revealed to the Observer this week. They show how the supermarket giant plans to knock down the current half-built retail park in Uxbridge Road, Slough and construct a brick and tinted window store made from environmentally friendly materials.
The supermarket proposes to sell 80 types of fresh bread, 150 cuts of meats and 110 different cuts of fish as well as the usual groceries, frozen food, drinks and beauty products.
Shoppers will have plenty of room to park as the store will also boast an underground car park.
Justin Fletcher, development manger at Morrisons, said: “Should the application be successful and we acquire the site, we would construct the first purpose-built Morrisons store to open in the town. This store would offer Morrisons high-quality fresh food.
Slough already has Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda stores, so the addition of a new Morrisons store would create more local competition and fresh choice which is beneficial to people living and shopping in the area.”
Morrisons is one of three supermarkets that is battling it out to build on the site, which is currently owned by Tesco.
Sainsbury’s has grand plans to knock down the half built structure and construct a new food superstore. But the property arm of Tesco – Spen Hill Developments – wants to also construct three retail units.
The site has been surrounded by controversy for the past year. Tesco originally had planning permission on build a four-unit retail park, but the Competition Commission said it will have to eventually sell off the land to avoid a monopoly on groceries across
Slough.
A decision on all three applications will be made by Slough Borough Council’s planning committee at a date yet to be decided.
