Wheel blow: the Windor wheel last year
PLANS for the grand opening of Windsor’s top summer attraction have ground to a halt this week.
The Windsor Observation Wheel was set to be opened by Royal Borough Mayor Cllr Dorothy Kemp on Friday.
But it has yet to be delivered from Germany and bosses of PWR Events – the company behind the attraction – blamed the delay on “logistical difficulties”.
The 180ft (55m) diameter wheel that features 40 gondolas has been held up at The Hague where it was being used. The firm says it won’t be opened in Windsor until next month.
Gudrun Allsobrook of PWR Events said: “It’s very unfortunate, but because of logistical difficulties the wheel is still in Germany.
“We can’t say when exactly it will be delivered but we will have the wheel open to the public by July 12 at the very latest.
“It can take up to a week to assemble the wheel but obviously we want to get it up as soon as possible given the delay.”
Situated in Alexander Gardens in Barry Avenue, the Observation Wheel – which has previously only been in place for the summer – will offer rides until November.
It gives spectacular views over the battlements of Windsor Castle, along the Thames and across the historic sites of Windsor and Eton.
Ticket prices per session are £6.50 per adult and £4.50 for children under 16. A private gondola is £30 or a champagne gondola can be booked on request.
The wheel opens seven days a week from 10am to 10pm. Tickets will be available at the wheel subject to availability (last tickets 9.30pm). Book in advance online at www.royalwindsorwheel.com
