Council staff to strike over pay
By Gurpreet Samrai
COUNCIL staff have confirmed they will be walking out of their jobs to strike over a pay dispute.
The industrial action – expected to take place on July 16 and 17 – will affect local government members of the trade union UNISON, including social workers, school meals workers, refuse collectors and teaching assistants.
The walk-out will be staged as a protest against this year’s below-inflation pay offer of 2.45 per cent. Royal Borough human resources manager, Warren King, said: “This is a national dispute between UNISON and the local government employers, and not a dispute between our own employees and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
“We are hopeful that we will be able to minimise disruption to key services.”
The action is expected to have an impact on schools in Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead, as teaching assistants and non-teaching staff may walk out.
The National Union of Teachers (NUT) – which staged a strike over pay in April – have said it fully supports the council workers’ action. Secretary of the NUT, Dr David Wills, said: “Members of the National Union of Teachers in Windsor and Maidenhead are fully behind the UNISON action.
“Teachers will refuse to take on any work which would normally be carried out by striking UNISON members.
“NUT representatives in Windsor and Maidenhead will be asking head teachers to carry out health and safety risk assessments as to whether schools should close.”
