Sites planned for travellers

A PUBLIC consultation on proposals to create traveller sites across the Royal Borough and Slough has been launched this week.
The plans have been put forward by the South East England Regional Assembly (SEERA) to create new, legal camping spaces for Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople in South East England.
The proposal could see between nine and 25 new sites in the Royal Borough and between six and 17 in Slough Borough Council.
The consultation, opened on Monday runs until 21 November 2008. The Assembly wants views on 10-year targets for new camping spaces, and how they should be spread across the region.
Chairman of the Assembly's Regional Planning Committee Cllr Moira Gibson said: "After years of uncertainty over making space for the Gypsy and Travelling communities, councils now have a duty to provide new spaces in a bid to cut homelessness and reduce illegal camping.
"We want to hear everyone's opinion on the new plans. Our proposals draw on advice from the region's councils and we will be working with them to gather views before the Assembly makes recommendations to Government next spring on the region's needs."
The Assembly's work will agree how many camping spaces are needed in each council area; individual councils will decide the exact location of new spaces.

Katherine, you are thinking about the illegal sites. Legal sits are like council houses. In return for rent, council tax, utilities bills etc, the Gypsies have a secure place to live with their families. Like council tenants they live by the rules or face eviction.
I live near an Irish Traveller site in London. It is clean tidy, the kids go to school and the women have even written a book about their lives, Moving Stories -ISBN 0951932306 - Traveller Education Team - London SE16 3LA.
No generators, no cockerels !

So as well as the current influx of migrate workers overpopulating Slough, housing market slump, etc we now have to find more spaces to accomodate yet more migratory people.
So in exchange for a secure site to pitch caravans they wil pay rates, council tax and utilities ? Perhaps someone should write a book about this and file it under fairy tales or "dummies guide for living in a fantasy world" as most Slough MPs seem to believe this codswallop they announce. Why dont they address the needs of residents of Slough and stop catering for the temporary dwellers.
