Boxing club cash windfall
A NEW amateur boxing club has been given money by a police group to buy extra equipment.
Jubilee Amateur Boxing Club, based at The Haymill Centre, had its first training session on September 2 for junior and senior boxers at all levels and for recreational boxers.
The club has been given £696 by the Sports and Social Club at Slough police station.
Dave Glewis is the senior coach and his son Chris was until recently a police officer in Slough. Several police officers from Slough are members of the club so the Social Club committee decided to support the boxing club.
Mr Glewis said: “Our aim is to try and give the youth of our community a healthy interest in boxing, to teach them respect, self-confidence and to give them self-esteem, which hopefully will keep them off the streets and make them better citizens.
“We have four coaches and we already have 32 boys and girls attending on a regular basis, with a waiting list of around 25. Although the club is run on a purely voluntary basis, it takes money to pay for equipment and hire of the hall, so we are always looking for donations and sponsors.”
Ch Insp Kate Ford, deputy commander of Slough local police area, said: “By giving youngsters something constructive to do in their spare time, the Jubilee Boxing Club is providing a much-needed service to the community, and we are very pleased to offer our support.”
A cheque is due to be handed over to Mr Glewis on Thursday at the centre in Burnham Lane.
