Better labour care at Wexham Park Hospital
MEDICS will soon keep a closer eye on expectant mums during labour and help prevent brain damage in babies thanks to a new state-of-the-art monitor.
A new fetal monitoring machine, which evaluates the wellbeing of the fetus during labour and the antenatal period, will be given to Wexham Park Hospital’s maternity department on Wednesday by the League of Friends of Slough Hospitals.
The equipment gives more detailed analysis on the condition of the unborn baby and helps identify any fetal distressed at a much earlier stage.
This means midwives can intervene earlier and help prevent conditions such brain damage.
Heatherwood Hospital’s maternity unit in Ascot also received a monitor last month which was donated by the League of Friends of Heatherwood Hospital. Both groups raised £12,000 towards the equipment.
Andrezej Pelsniak, Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s consultant obstetrician, said: “The new monitors are a great addition to the equipment in our maternity department that we use to monitor babies’ progress during labour. We hope this fantastic equipment will serve for the benefit of our local community.”
The Leagues are dedicated to providing support for patients and staff at both hospitals, and have funded many special projects over the past five decades.
