TOP Government ministers met Slough’s criminals to launch the controversial fluorescent jackets for offenders.

The Justice Secretary Jack Straw and Home Secretary Jacqui Smith saw offenders wearing the high visibility bibs for the first time while carrying out community service at the West Wing Arts Centre, Stoke Road, Slough.

There are around 35,000 offenders carrying out community service at any one time and if offenders refuse to wear them twice then they will be taken to court for breaching their order.

Mr Straw, who launched the jackets on Monday said this is the Government’s way of showing that ‘justice is being served’.

He added: “ It’s been controversial as there were concerns expressed by the probation service. We hope by introducing them that it goes well. This shows offenders that committing crime has consequences.”
