Blues promotion dream ends
By Observer sport
Southern League Division One South & West play-off semi-final
Burnham 1, Swindon Supermarine 2
BURNHAM Football Club's promotion dream ended with an agonising loss at the Gore last night (Tuesday).
The Blues lost 2-1 to Swindon Supermarine in the semi-finals of the Southern League Division One South & West play-offs.
Their opponents will now progress to a final against Taunton Town, who beat Paulton Rovers 4-1 on Monday and the winner of that match will be promoted.
Burnham, however, will have to be content with their third-placed finish in the league, which manager Dave Mudge was still immensely pleased with.
He said: "To have got to where we did this season is a credit to the team. Its 23 wins in the season, which is absolutely fantastic."
Swindon opened the scoring after 19 minutes through Justyn McKay but Burnham hit back through their top-scorer Rob Saunders ten minutes before half-time.
Supermarine got what turned out to be the winning goal just two minutes after the break when Dan Willment deflected a wicked inswinging Chris Taylor free-kick into his own net.
