WSE&H Ladies take second in Portsmouth
By Observer sport
Rose Reynolds was one of the unlucky WSE&H athletes not to finish her race
WINDSOR Slough Eton and Hounslow Athletics club’s (WSE&H) Southern Women’s League ladies team had to be content with second place at their latest meet in Portsmouth.
A trio of unfortunate incidents saw three of the ladies fail to finish their respective races as WSE&H were narrowly defeated by Reading.
In the sprint hurdles both Rose Reynolds, in the senior event, and Clem Nicholson in the U17 event hit a hurdle and did not finish.
Then Freya Williams suffered a breathing attack during her 1,500m race and was forced to pull out. Coach Irene Speller commented afterwards that Williams is a brave athlete, and that hopefully she will bounce back from the incident quickly.
Despite these mishaps the team did well and produced some excellent performances. Sarah Phelps, Natalie Daniels and Steph Brown, lead the charge of some of WSE&H's most committed young athletes.
Phelps, who also competed in the NYAL match on Sunday, competed in three events and the relay and gained two wins, two second places and massive personal best (PB) of 12.6s in the sprint hurdles.
Daniels took on the same number of events, including the 300 hurdles, which she had not competed in prior to this match. While she did well in the other events, Daniels was a revelation in the 300 hurdles, in which she left the rest of the competitors in her wake.
Brown added the senior 400m hurdles race to her high and long jump events and her performances brought many points to the team tally. She also went on to compete on Sunday, showing the sort of team spirit that has made the club the success that it is.
Ana Gomez produced PBs in both the long jump and discus. A double success in the latter event was completed courtesy of a PB from Taymah Fento.
In the middle distances Maryse Haynes gained a PB in the 1,500m while Hannah Kirby and Sophie Daniels placed in the top two in the 800m.
The girls sprint races saw PBs for Pascale Waterson, Shalisha Patrick and Tracey Jacobs–Asiedu, as well as a second place finish in the 4x100m relay.
In the senior throws, Joanne John and Janet Smith showed their ever–present team spirit, by covering all but one of the eight events. Both athletes won their respective hammer and discus competitions and Johns was rewarded with PBs in the discus and shot put.
Vicki Cooney returned to action after a back injury to run an excellent first leg in the senior 4x100m relay.
Cooney’s partner in the 100m, Simone Francis, showed another committed performance to finish fourth in the B race in 13.3s.
There were also early season celebrations for Maxine Clarke, when she claimed a new best of 3.20m in the pole vault, despite windy conditions.
Pippa Callingham and Lucy Roe in the senior 800m and Jenny Heckford in the 100m hurdles and triple jump also produced bests.
