Double success for Excelsior girls
By Observer Sport
ETON Excelsior Rowing Club are celebrating after their Junior Girls’ squad brought home a silver and a bronze medal from the National Schools’ Regatta over the Bank Holiday weekend.
At the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham Frankie Lovely and Daisy Colsell continued their successful partnership in the Simon Sears Cup for the U16 double sculls.
They advanced through to the final where this time they had to be content with a silver medal behind local rivals Marlow RC.
In the same category Tessa Johncox and Grace Hogan just missed out on a semi-final spot by one second, making them the fastest non-qualifiers.
Lovely was also a part of Eton’s second success of the weekend, the U16 quad sculls. She was joined in the boat by Matilda Horn, Tessa Johncox and Grace Hogan as Eton pushed for a medal in difficult conditions.
With the rain lashing down the Eton crew sat in fourth place before one last push in the final stretch brought them passed the Maidenhead boat and into the bronze medal position. The crew bravely held on to claim third by less than a second.
Elsewhere at the event Matilda Horn progressed to the semi-final of the U15 single sculls and Daisy Colsell finished fifth in the processional qualifier in the U16 version of that event.
The club’s youngest athletes at the event were Ellie Quarrington and Suzie Lindon-Morris who did well to reach the finals in the U14 double sculls event.
Former Eton Excelsior Junior, Phoebe Lucas, who now races for Marlow RC, won gold in the U16 double and quadruple sculls events.
