English Premier Ice Hockey Cup

Slough Jets 5, Romford Raiders 2

THE Slough Jets brought their winning streak to six in a row after what head coach Steve Moria called an ‘ugly’ cup game against Romford Raiders tonight (Saturday).

Moria scored twice himself while also picking up two assists during the 5-2 victory, which Slough were made to work hard for.

Romford were determined to break up any flow of the game with niggling grabs and checks. The tactics worked in the first period as the Jets picked up 10 penalty minutes and managed just one scrappy goal from Tony Redmond.

However, they improved their discipline after the break and were rewarded with two more goals – Moria’s first squeezed in at the near post and a Jan Krajicek special from the blue line.

Slough were slow to get started in the third period despite a powerplay carried over from the last. Romford’s Juraj Rusic brought the score to 3-1 with a shorthanded goal at 40.45, but Joe Ciccarello restored the advantage with a sweet finish four minutes later.

Andrius Kaminskas gave Romford a small lifeline at 51.02, taking the score to 4-2. But Moria’s second at 56.08, while Andrej Sporina served a hooking minor, secured the win.

The game ended with a couple of flare-ups in the final two minutes. A late check from Kaminskas on Scott Spearing sparked a reaction from several players and Romford’s Mark Williams ended up with a match penalty for roughing.

Former Jet Norman Pinnington, playing his first game for Romford after signing from Wightlink, picked a fight with Joe Ciccarello with 14 seconds left on the clock. The Canadian accepted the invitation and both players were given 2+2.

The win sees Slough stretch their lead at the top of Group B in the English Premier Cup.
