SLOUGH’S survival in Southern Counties North received a major boost on Saturday after the Greenies toppled league leaders Olney at Upton Court Park.
Paul Rendall’s side are are now sitting fourth from bottom, with four points more than bottom club Newbury Stags.
With three games left to play, Slough will need to pick up at least one more win to be sure of safety.
It was the league leaders who took the lead in the match with a length of the field return to score under the posts for a converted try after only two minutes.
James O’Reilly hit back for the Greenies with three points from a penalty.
Slough’s first try came from scrum-half Ross Evans, who picked up the ball from the back of a wheeled scrum and made a break for the line, finding no defenders in his way to score under the posts. O’Reilly converted.
The second half was Slough dominated, as the pack camped inside the Olney half.
The pressure got to the visitors as flanker Andy Edwards peeled off the maul and crossed the line.
Slough then extended their lead thanks to O’Reilly, taking a pass from Evans, wrong-footing the defender and sliding over in the corner.
Evans bagged his second try soon after to seal the vital win for Slough.
Olney hit back for a consolation try with two minutes left on the clock.
