Sweetman: 'We must win to stand any chance'
By Patrick Corlett
ROCK bottom club Newport IOW must be beaten by Slough Town if the Rebels are to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.
Derek Sweetman has said his side have a ‘must win’ game at St Georges Park tomorrow (Saturday).
Slough are still five points adrift of Bracknell, but have a game in hand which is at Bridgwater Town on Tuesday, April 22.
However, they face Newport first who have lost their last nine games on the bounce and have only chalked up 11 points this season, but Slough will be without injured keeper Lee Carroll who damaged his hand.
“It’s a must win game for us really, if we are going to stand any chance of surviving we will have to go down there and win,” said Sweetman.
“Anything less than three points is no good to us.
“We are hoping that Bracknell slip up, but we are clear in what we have to do. We’ve got three games left to play and we’ve got to win them all.
“If we win our last three games and go down then so be it.”
The Rebels are fresh from defeating Godalming Town last week – their first win under Sweetman.
“The boys are quite buoyant,” he remarked. “We had a good session last night (Tuesday). After Saturday’s performance and victory the lads feel on the up.
“Sometimes you have to cross your fingers and hope that everything comes into place, but we will do our best.
“Lee Carroll is injured, he damaged his ligaments in his hand so that is a long term injury. One or two others are carrying knocks, bumps and bruises, but we should be near full strength for the weekend.”
