Moria plays it cool to keep Jets hot

ONE of sport’s oldest adages – ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ – is exactly the approach Slough Jets head coach Steve Moria intends to take.
The club enjoyed one of the its finest seasons last year, finishing second in the league and league cup before winning the all-important play-offs, so naturally he is happy to keep things as they are.
Blaz Emersic returns to the club, on the second year of a contract and Carl Thompson, a product of the youth system, are two of the names Moria is pleased to still see on the teamsheet at The Hangar. “Blaz had a very good year for us last year, he’s very hard working and we’re excited to have him back,” said Moria. “Carl really exceeded expectations, he played like a veteran last year.
“I want to keep as many of the players from last year as I can. It also works in your favour because it will be easier to prepare as more people will know the systems we want to play.
“Things are going to be tight financially, but they are at alot of clubs. The wage demands from the the British players are going up each year.” However, there are a couple of things working the clubs’ favour. Chelmsford have folded and the Elite League has allowed teams another import player, effectively swelling the pool of home-grown players.
The Jets’ season starts in mid-September and Moria hopes to get as many of the squad on the ice in Slough once a week.
“The play-off is the one everyone wants to win,” added Moria. “It’s the great one-off occasion but we also want to win the league this time and prove we are the best team without doubt.”
