Defeat for Phoenix
Rugby
Phoenix Rugby Club launched their home league season on Saturday with a 17-22 defeat to rivals Oxford at Institute Road.
The visitors scored first ten minutes in, when they converted a penalty for offside in front of the posts
But Phoenix came back strongly and Weeraphon Tongchumsaeng broke clean through to score the opening try of the match. The hosts extended their lead on 20 minutes with a fine try by wing forward Duncan Wardle.
Phoenix struck again through Wardle when he picked up from a scrum and drove through under the posts from 20 metres. Coltman converted and Phoenix were very much in the driving seat at half-time, with a 14 point lead.
Oxford reduced their deficit to nine points with a well taken try but again failed to convert from beneath the posts.
The away side then spent most of the second half pressing Phoenix inside their own half but only managed a single try as the host's defence held firm.
With just five minutes to go and Phoenix having defended stoutly, Oxford scored their third try of the match to take them to within two points.
Phoenix were unable to defend their lead and Oxford crashed through for the match winning score just to the left of the posts. The conversion ensured Phoenix needed a try to level the scores, but Oxford were able to keep them out to record a remarkable 22-17 victory.
