Ton up for Drifters
Rugby
Drifters recorded their biggest ever league win on Saturday in securing a 103-5 victory away to Wheatley.
The visitors attacked from the start and only an unlucky knock-on prevented them from scoring from the first move.
However at the resultant scrum they drove Wheatley off the ball and at the second phase a delicate chip allowed Alex Rankin to gather and score under the posts for a converted try.
A crashing run from lock Steve Binns and an opportunist drive from skipper Alan Morgan put Drifters 19-0 ahead inside five minutes and the game was effectively won.
Two tries for Jason Wilson and one apiece for James Branscombe, Alex Coombes, Alex Gregory and Stuart Taylor gave Drifters a half time lead of 55-0.
In the second half, the tries continued to flow with three more for Wilson who is on fire this season.
With such a convincing lead it was inevitable that concentration and discipline would lapse a little and a succession of penalties bought Wheatley into the Drifters 22 and a missed tackle following a slip allowed them to score.
To their credit Drifters regrouped and cut out the errors creating two more tries for Taylor and further scores for Binns, Gregory and Lake.
Despite the huge score Drifters again spurned several scoring opportunities but the foundation of a very strong season is now firmly in place.
