AN 'ABSOLUTELY magnificent’ care home flower display took the top spot at this year’s Slough in Bloom competition.

Salt Hill Care Home won the business category and overall prize at the awards ceremony on Saturday.

Judges said the display at the front of the Bath Road care home was 'a joy to see’.

Other winners included the Kings Head pub, in Cippenham, and James Elliman Academy, in Elliman Avenue, Slough.

Organiser Margaret Inniss said: “The Salt Hill Care Home display was absolutely magnificent. It was very good last year and was awarded a special by judges, but this year it’s even better.” Mulkraj Ram, care home manager, added: “We were very pleased. It plays an integral part in residents’ lives here - it’s part of their daily activities. We are proud of it.” As well as winners being crowned, gold awards were handed out to highly commended entrants. St Laurence’s Church, in Upton Court Road, got an award for its rose garden in the graveyard. Verger Allan James said: “We are putting some character into the ancient churchyard so it was quite nice to be recognised.” Mrs Inniss added: “Overall the entries were very good. We had a lot of new entries which is always a great comfort. It’ about getting people to brighten up their gardens and take care of them.” Winners: Overall winner - Salt Hill Care Home Residential front garden - Raj and Ranjit Aujla, of Quaves Road Residential hanging baskets - Pat and Chris Walters, Scholars Walk Best pub - Kings Head, Lower Cippenham Lane Best rear garden - Ben Johnson, Cecil Way Best communal gardens - Teresa Angrave, Bunten Meade Business category - Salt Hill Care Home Special project - Herschel Grammar School Community group project - James Elliman Academy
