AN ANTI-fascist activist group has organised a counter-demonstration in Slough after a group which says it is 'fighting militant Islam' will take to the streets of the town.

The Berkshire Antifascists group says it will be in the centre of Slough on Saturday, September 5, in counter protest against a group called Berkshire Infidels.

The latter group states on its Facebook page, which has around 750 Likes, it is ‘fighting militant Islam’ and will begin a demonstration at 1pm though no other details are yet confirmed.

Slough Detective Chief Inspector Jim Reeves, from Thames Valley Police, said: "We don't know the route they're taking, or how many people are going to be there.

"We have been in contact with the organiser, so we are well aware of their intentions to demonstrate on Saturday."

Police confirmed they will also be running a question and answer feed online in the build up to the demonstration, to answer any questions that residents may have.

A statement made from Thames Valley Police regarding the demonstrations added said: "The Force is working with protest organisers and partner agencies to facilitate a peaceful demonstration.

"Our aim is always to ensure that the impact on local people, businesses and visitors is minimised.

"Thames Valley Police and our partners recognise the potential impact of any demonstration in Slough, and we ask for the support of all sections of the community."

A statement from Berkshire Antifascists read: "We're growing in strength which is illustrative of the fact that we are not tolerating racism and fascism on our streets any longer."

The demonstrations comes 18 months after the English Defence League (EDL) chose Slough to stage a march which also prompted a counter-demonstration. More than 500 people took to High Street though the police reported 'no major incidents' on that occasion though items were thrown and a smoke bomb set off.

A large quantity of police dogs and riot vans, as well as a police helicopter, were used in an attempt to maintain order, and officers used protective equipment to prevent themselves from harm.

The EDL said the demonstration was a response to plans for a Muslim community centre in Langley and plans for an all-girls Muslim-faith based Free School in Slough.
