A 21-YEAR-OLD graduate plans to broaden her horizons while volunteering with a sustainable development project in Africa.

Chloe McShane, a recent University of Kent psychology graduate from Burnham, will be heading out to Tanzania as part of a project organised by Raleigh International, a UK based charity working on sustainable development projects.

Miss McShane said: "I was planning on taking a gap year. I hope to do a masters but not straight away - I wanted to be able to do something worthwhile.

"The organisation goes to the most deprived countries and provides water sanitation and health education - things like the importance of washing your hands, as well entrepreneurial skills sessions for the locals there.

"We volunteer for three months helping to develop these projects."

The project is part of International Citizen Service (ICS), which brings young people together to fight poverty and make a difference where it is needed most.

Miss McShane will be heading out in February and is looking forward to the challenges she may face.

She said: "Having no electricity, toilets, no beds - none of the luxuries we're used to - it will create a sense of independence.

"I'm looking forward to it. I think it will make me so much more appreciative."

In order to get out there she must first raise £800 for the project through her own fundraising.

Her first event will be a charity quiz and raffle fundraiser at Farnham Common Village Hall, on Saturday, December 5.

Miss McShane said: "It would be great to have the people of Slough - the town I have lived in all my life - involved in this fundraiser!"
