A POPULAR village pub which goes the extra mile has been rewarded as the Pub of the Year.

The White Horse, in Village Lane, Hedgerley, scooped the award organised by the Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

The pub has won the award on numerous occasions, and picks up the crown for the second year running.

The free house is well known in the area for its diverse range of beers and real ales, with more than 1,000 different beers on tap throughout the year.

Landlord Kevin Brooker, 64, said: "We are really pleased and it is nice to be recognised, especially for all the different beers that we manage to source.

"It is always nice to be recognised by the people that know what they are talking about.

"We have won it a few times but it is always nice to win it. It would be great to go on and win the county award."

Mr Brooker, has run the pub alongside his wife Janet for 35 years, 24 of which they have owned it, and is hopeful that the pub can repeat the success of a few years ago by winning the Berkshire CAMRA title.

He thinks the range of beers the pub offers could be a key factor.

He said: "I think the diversity of the beers and the breweries we offer is why we have been recognised.

"Because of where we are we have to give people a reason to drive to us. There are a lot of good breweries out and about but we need something different to get people to drive to us.

"We go the extra mile to get the different beers and breweries. We always have around eight beers on and six or seven of those are new beers or breweries."

The White Horse will be presented with its Pub of the Year award on Sunday, May 29 during its 24th annual beer festival.

It will compete against the Queen's Head in Wokingham, Fox and Hounds in Caversham, and King Charles Tavern in Newbury for the Berkshire crown.
