FIREFIGHTERS swapped tackling blazes for cleaning dirty cars to help serving and retired firefighters and their families.

The team at Langley Fire Station raised more than £1,600 for The Firefighters Charity with a charity car wash last Saturday.

The money will go towards supporting both current and ex-firefighters across the UK in a range of ways, including rehabilitation after injuries, counselling and more.

Crew manager Geoff Wright at Langley fire station, said: "It went really well, we raised just over £1,600.

"It was a constant stream of cars, I don't think we could have done any more cars than we did.

"We get quite a few people who come every year and we also got quite a lot of passing traffic.

"It was really relaxed, a lot of people went home to get their kids so we could show them round the station."

The money raised this weekend will help the national charity help in a number of ways, including getting injured firefighters back to work.

Mr Wright added: "We do a relatively dangerous job and there are quite a few injuries that happen at work.

"It's really good that we are able to get the help that we need."
