STUDENTS in Langley have worked together to help flush away poverty across the world.

Travel and tourism students at East Berkshire College raised more than £380 for the Toilet Twinning initiative, started by the charity, Tearfund.

Selina Kaur, 19, who is studying a Travel and Tourism BTEC Level 3 course, was one of the organisers of the fundraiser.

She said: “The event was an enjoyable way to raise money for the charity.

“Everyone has worked really well together and we have learnt a lot about each other’s cultures, from food and dancing to native costumes and traditions.”

Money raised from the event will help to provide a school with a block of toilets in Mariani, in Kenya, and latrines in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Those countries were selected by the students and the toilets were then chosen by Toilet Twinning based on where funds are currently most needed.

There was international food, music, dance and fun competitions at the event as students entertained visitors by performing dances from around the world including Bhangra.

There was also a DJ at the event where staff and students could donate money to hear a song of their choice.

The event ended with a raffle, offering prizes including a Nintendo Wii, cinema tickets, chocolates and vouchers for the College’s Hair and Beauty Salon.
