AN INSPIRING charity supporter has raised more than £3,000 following his own battle with cancer.

Ken Gerrish, of Marlborough Road, Slough, delivered a cheque for £3,150 to Macmillan Cancer support on Thursday, June 30, after hosting 21 golf teams at Wokefield Park, Reading, for a day of fairway fun, raffles and nearest the pin competitions.

Mr Gerrish, organised the event with his wife Julie, having received support from Macmillan services over the years as well as other family members.

Mr Gerrish said: “When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer my mind began racing - the word cancer just conjured up some awful images.

“However, my Macmillan Nurse really put everything into context, and made me see there were lots of treatment options, with the great advancements that have been made.”

The golf day was a great success, with a total of £3,150 being raised.

Wokefield Park offered support by providing raffle prizes and a wonderful dinner for the golfers. BMW also offered the opportunity to win a mini on one of the holes, which added a great competitive element to the day.

The couple are now looking forward to planning their next golfing event for next summer.

Around two million people across the UK are living with the consequences of a cancer diagnosis. Macmillan provides medical, emotional, financial and practical help for cancer patients, from specialist cancer nurses to grants to cancer patients with money problems.

Natalie Hill, fundraising manager for East Berkshire said: “Sadly the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is increasing every year and that means Macmillan’s support for people living with cancer is in more demand than ever.

“No one should have to face cancer alone and it’s only through the fantastic support we get from events such as Ken and Julie’s golf day that we can be there for people cancer and their family when they need us most.”
