A PLAYGROUND could be reopened in a couple of weeks as the council awaits delivery of new pieces of equipment.

Slough Borough Council (SBC) has confirmed that the playground equipment at Langley Memorial Park is to be repaired or replaced after it was hit with vandalism and thefts.

The Observer reported last month that children had been left with empty frames where swings should be, missing play items and a climbing frame barricaded with metal fencing.

Gordon Moffatt, a father-of-one who uses the park with his three-year-old daughter, was concerned that nothing had been done since concerns were raised with the council.

He said: ""It has fallen into dereliction over time, raising the issue of safety, and the playground has just stayed as it was.

"It is a concern. Kids do not get to use the facilities as they could or should do. It remains unsafe.

"It just seems that raising it as an issue which you felt might be dealt with fairly quickly.

"There should be facilities for children to use here, especially during the summer holidays - I hope it is not one of those things that gets done at the end of the summer holidays."

But a SBC spokeswoman has confirmed that delivery of replacement items for the climbing frame are on the way.

She said: "We have been waiting for a replacement part for the main piece of equipment after it was sadly extensively damaged and made structurally unsafe just more than a month ago. This replacement piece of deck is being shipped from the continent and is expected to be installed as soon as we get it – meaning we can remove the fencing and open this up to children again."

The basket swing which has been stolen twice is unlikely to be replaced, but a new piece of equipment put in its place due to the £1,000 cost of replacing it each time.

Residents who witness any suspicious behaviour are being encouraged to alert the council by calling the antisocial behaviour hotline on 01753 875298 or police on 101.
