HIGH speed internet will be coming to a village after Virgin Media unveiled the latest communities to benefit from is expansion across the UK.

Farnham Common is among 30 communities to receive an upgrade to ultrafast broadband as part of the £3bn network boost.

The South Bucks village was selected through the Supercharging Local Communities initiative, after local residents and businesses voted for their community to benefit from the scheme.

Trevor Clapp, chairman of Farnham Royal Parish Council which also serves Farnham Common, said: "From a parish council point of view, the principle of rolling out high speed internet to everybody is welcome.

"But it needs to be handled quite carefully in terms of how it is implemented and needs to be coordinated with other highways works. The last thing we want to see is the digging up of roads or pavements that have been resurfaced.

"I suspect a lot of people will be happy with it, as we have had a few complaints about not being served by BT and Openreach, and areas in the village that BT said they cannot get to yet."

Residents and businesses will be connected with fibre broadband running directly to their premise, offering ultrafast, future proof connectivity with download speeds of up to 200mbps, as well as 260 television channels, access to Sky Sports and BT Sport, and on demand TV.

Bucks County Council leader Martin Tett, said: "High speed broadband is a modern life essential, not a luxury, for every resident and business. That’s why supporting initiatives like this continues to be one of the County Council’s top priorities.”

Stoke Poges was one of the first villages to be connected as part of the scheme, with Virgin Media announcing it as one of the top 10 communities in the vote last month, and Denham has also been selected in the latest round of voting which ran from February 29 to June 30.

Neil Bartholomew, executive director at Virgin Media, said: “We are delighted to be supercharging these Buckinghamshire villages, it shows that ultrafast broadband and top-notch TV isn’t just for big cities. We have been overwhelmed by the response from the local communities and as a result we have decided to speed up our network expansion plans, to connect the communities by spring 2017.”

Votes were cast on the Cable My Street website, and as the expansion continues, Virgin Media is encouraging people to register and vote for their communities. Visit www.virginmedia.com/cablemystreet
