INSPECTORS have said more work needs to be done to improve community learning services in Slough.

Slough Borough Council's community and learning skills service has been graded as requires improvement by Ofsted in a report published last week.

The report states that the quality of teaching, learning and assessment is not good enough, but praised the work done to support apprentices.

Philip Wright, head of learning and community services at Slough Borough Council, said: “It has been a challenging few years for the service; we have undergone a restructure and experienced a lot of change.

“We’re pleased to have been recognised for the support we give apprentices and the partnerships we’ve forged with local organisations such as Aspire, Job Centre Plus and primary schools.

“However, we are disappointed to be graded as requiring improvement in other areas.

“We have already started developing an action plan to address the issues raised by Ofsted, with a particular focus on improving our classroom teaching."

The report, published on Tuesday last week, also was critical of the way English and maths is taught.

In 2012 the community learning and skills service of Slough Borough Council merged with, and now incorporates, the provision previously funded by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
