A COMPENSATION claim, following a car accident in Slough's Halfords car park, has been exposed as fraudulent by CCTV footage.

The incident occurred in November 2015 when another car reversed into the man's parked car.

A man submitted an initial claim for damage to his vehicle, and he then submitted a personal injury claim for injuries to the amount of £5,000.

The driver who caused the incident asked Halfords to provide CCTV footage from the car park. The footage revealed the man was standing next to his car at the time of the accident and could not have been injured.

The footage was passed to the man's insurance company LV= who then contacted the City of London Police's Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) to investigate.

During an interview with detectives, the man initially tried to maintain his story. On viewing the CCTV footage, he finally admitted his dishonesty.

He subsequently received a police caution on Tuesday, August 2.

The IFED have decided to release the footage to serve as a warning to the public that submitting fraudulent insurance claims is a criminal offence.

Mohammed Darr, Detective Constable from the IFED, said: “This was one of the most blatant cases I've dealt with and he was clearing lying to try and get a compensation payout for injuries he never received.

"He now has this on his criminal record and he also has to declare the fact he was involved in a fraudulent activity to his employer.

"As well as being criminal, this kind of behaviour also drives up insurance premiums for honest customers and we all end up footing the bill.

"It may be tempting to submit exaggerated or dishonest claims, but it is fraud and where cases are identified they can be passed to police and you could end up with a criminal record, a conviction or even end up in prison.”
