MOTORISTS in Slough have been urged to be vigilant as police step up their patrols following a spike in car crime.

Over the last two weeks thirteen thefts have occurred, mainly across the Cippenham and Haymill areas of Slough, with the offences taking place over night.

Taxis and other vehicles have been targeted, mainly for loose change, but also for sat navs, mobile phones and sun glasses in the spree from Sunday, August 7 to Sunday, August 14.

Detective Sergeant Steve Madoc-Jones, from Local CID in Slough, said: “Slough has experienced a significant number of thefts from motor vehicles over the past week or so and I am urging motorists to be extra vigilant and to remove all valuables from their vehicles. As a result of this issue there will be increased police patrols in the area.

“Over the weekend, we have had five unattended taxis in Cippenham targeted with cash and other property being stolen. I would encourage taxi drivers especially to ensure that they clear their vehicles of all valuables and loose change and where possible to leave armrests and glove boxes open to show that they have been emptied."

Advice has been issued by police, encouraging motorists to check all windows are closed and your car is locked when leaving it, to park in attended car parks and when at home to park in a garage if you have one or in a well-lit area.

Motorists are also being advised to take all personal possessions out of the car and to fit your car with an alarm or immobiliser.

Det Sgt Madoc-Jones added: “Despite the recent increase however, I am pleased to report that the overall number of thefts from motor vehicles in Slough is down by 19 per cent with 80 fewer victims this year compared to the same period last year.

“Tackling vehicle crime remains very important to us and I would appeal to residents to contact police if they see anything suspicious or have any information which could assist us.

“Leaving money and valuable items such as smart phones, tablet computers and laptops either in view or secreted in glove boxes or boots of vehicles is not advisable.”

Anyone with any information about thefts from vehicles should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
