TAXI drivers in Slough will be given training in how to spot potential victims of abuse or exploitation, writes Tom Sables.

The compulsory two hour sessions in safeguarding, run by Slough Borough Council, is part of the council's licensing team's effort to protect vulnerable individuals in the borough.

Councillor Paul Sohal, commissioner for regulation and consumer protection, said: “Our taxi drivers do a fantastic job already but we believe they have a bigger part to play in helping us protect the vulnerable people in our community.

“By formalising our training and making it mandatory, we will be equipping all of our drivers with the tools they need to help any vulnerable passengers they come across, including those who might be victims of physical, mental or sexual abuse.”

Those with current licences will be joined by new applicants and private hire operators on the course.

Training sessions will be held in the Flexi Hall at The Centre in Farnham Road on 3, 6, 20, 21 October. Sessions will also be in the Main Hall at Chalvey Community Centre on 25 and 26 October and 11 November.

All sessions run from 9:30-11:30am and 12:30-2:30pm.
