PUPILS were given a work out after Team GB members visited their school last week.

Hurdler Serita Solomon, 27, and British indoor triple jump champion Nathan Fox, 26, visited St Mary’s Primary School, in Yew Tree Road, Slough, on Wednesday, March 15.

The school was hosting an all-day athletics event and the elite athletes put the pupils through their paces as part of the Sport for Schools scheme.

The initiative sends athletes into schools to inspire them to become more active with physical activities in the form of a fitness circuit and motivational talks.

Serita Solomon took children from every class through a typical Team GB warm-up before addressing two assemblies about how she has reached the level she is at today and what it takes to become an athlete.

The athletes stayed for the duration of the day and even had their first school dinner for a while in the school canteen.

Some of the school’s Year 5 children helped to organise the event.

The school’s Julie McMahon said: “It was a really good day and well organised by Sport for Schools. The children had a fantastic time and really enjoyed it.”

Each child was sponsored to participate in the day and those who raised the most won prizes like wristbands and signed posters.

The money raised will be used to improve the schools sports facilities and equipment and a portion will also go towards supporting British athletes.
