PHOENIX Old Boys Youth under-18s secured a title win after a 1-0 victory against Beaconsfield Town, writes Eshwar Dutta.

Phoenix went into the game know just a point would be enough for them to lift the title but, having drew with Widmer End United, they were determined to make sure there were no more slip-ups.

A bright start forced the Beaconsfield keeper into action as both Joe Carey and Kris Chmielewski had chances to put the away side a goal up.

Building on from this, Phoenix appeared to be the more dominant team, but Beaconsfield stuck to their task and saw the two sides go in level at the break (0-0).

A strong team talk from joint-bosses Mark Williams and Chris Talbot installed belief during the break and it soon paid dividends.

A well-won tackle and through ball from midfielder Mihai Florea saw striker Carey calmly finish for his 16th goal of the season with just over 30 minutes to play.

Beaconsfield then started to pile on the pressure and a penalty appeal was turned away by referee Richard Turner, before a well-struck free-kick forced Phoenix keeper Andrew Overton into a fine save.

Phoenix could have extended their lead as both Jan Asher Alix and Rudolf Shotaj went close to scoring in the latter stages Williams said: “The team have been superb this year. We deserve this.”

Captain, Sam Talbot added: “It’s all down to the hard work in training and listening to what Mark and Chris have to say each week.”

Vice captain, Chmielewski, said: “It’s been a great season and all the hard work we put in has paid off. Credit goes to the coaches who stuck by us during the hard times.”

Dutta added: “From the start of the season we have given 100 per-cent and this has been proven looking at our results. Any teams that wins 14 games out of 18 deserves it.

“I’m really looking forward to what next season brings us.”

A special mention goes to keeper Overton whose coaches James Conell, father Dave Overton and Uncle Derek Hayes have all contributed to his success this season.

Phoenix Old Boys won the first-ever Farnham Park Cup on Saturday.

The Old Boys beat Mercia United in the semi-final and Hill Park W.M.C 3-2 in the final.

The goals were scored by Sam Bodey and two from Nathan McVay. The winning goal came in the last two minutes of the match.
