Victoria Barracks in Windsor was subject to an armed police cordon last night after a 'suspicious' incident involving two men.

But this morning police revealed the incident was not terrorist related and the men have been released.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) were called to the scene in Sheet Street before 9pm last night - where two men were reported to have been 'acting suspiciously'.

Both men, in their thirties, were arrested and kept in police custody overnight.

But this morning police revealed they had been released without charge.

The authorities were taking no chances last night though.

Armed response officers were at the scene and Sheet Street was cordoned off to the public at Victoria Street and at the top leading to High Street.

Cllr Derek Wilson (Con, Oldfield) was returning from a Royal Borough meeting at Windsor's Guildhall when he was prevented from going to collect his car at the council offices in York House, Sheet Street. York House is directly opposite the Victoria Barracks.

He said: "The police eventually let me through to get my car (around 10.05pm). The Barracks themselves were closed. It appears there was a security issued there which is why they closed the road.

"They were not allowing anyone to go down beyond the cordon."

The incident comes just weeks after the March Westminster attack caused terror barriers to be put up around Windsor Castle to protect the Changing The Guard. The barriers are still present and the ceremony was cancelled yesterday in the light of the Manchester attacks and the increased national terror level.

TVP said yesterday that they would be deploying more officers to key sites around the region in response.

Wednesday's incident highlights how seriously the threat level is now and police are continuing to warn people to remain on high alert.
