PETER Phillips admits to being “over the moon” as Langley won their first East Berkshire Premier Division title.

In a tense final day, Langley won 5-1 at Richings Park to secure the title and complete a memorable treble-winning season which also includes the Ascot & District Cup and East Berkshire League Cup.

Phillips believes the challenge was to get the players to believe in their abilities but, once that was achieved, his side have not looked back.

“We could’ve wrapped it up two weeks ago against Old Windsor but it wasn’t to be, but we had a second bite at the cherry,” the Langley coach told the Observer.

“The boys produced a controlled and professional performance and we got the job done, and it was fantastic to experience all the emotions that come with it.

“It makes all the hard work that has been put in, all the training sessions and things that go on behind the scenes, worthwhile.

“It was brilliant to watch the players’ reactions because they’ve really on on as a team. They’ve worked hard and seen it through, so we’re over the moon.

“The two big turning points for us was trying to get the players to believe in how good they were, and wins against our rivals Iver Heath Rovers and Delaford.

“We went into every game feeling like we could win and played to do so, and we felt the matches we lost could’ve been avoided, but it made for a good finale.”

Phillips continued: “I’m not going to lie, it was tense against Richings Park but I’m absolutely over the moon to have completed the treble.

“If you said at the start of the season we would win the league and two cups, we would’ve taken your hand off but, as the season went on, the lads realised how good they were.

“It’s a great moment for me and John Thirkell (manager) in his first year in charge, and makes everything feel worth it.”

Langley secured the title thanks to goals from Ben White, Callum Hughes, Chris Morgan and two by man of the match Shemaron Carty.

Looking ahead to the future, Phillips said: “There’s a lot more to come from this side but it’s all up in the air at the minute.

“Not to denounce the Hellenic League, but it’s not really a step up and there’s a lot of travelling involved. We will know more in the coming weeks.”
