Travellers have taken over a private field in Farnham Royal, South Bucks, after arriving there on Saturday.

Between 30 and 50 caravans have pulled into the field off Blackpond Lane, opposite the junction with Devonshire Green.

However because it is not public land, the council cannot ask the travellers to move on and it has become a civil matter, Thames Valley Police confirmed.

The Observer understands the private landowner is aware of the situation.

A 23-year-old woman who lives nearby and did not wish to be named, said around five caravans arrived on Saturday night before scores of them started arriving.

The resident, who works shifts, said: "It has been really rowdy at night and I can't get to sleep."

Thames Valley Police said it is separately investigating two reports of criminal damage in the Blackpond Lane area.

  • On Saturday a window had been smashed at a property between 11am and 2.15pm.
  • On Sunday, there was a report of two wing mirrors on a Vauxhall Zafira having been ripped off between 8pm and 11pm.
