SLOUGH’s Chamber of Commerce has urged the government’s advisory commission on large national projects not to forget about the Western Rail Link to Heathrow (WRLtH).

The project, which would see fast direct trains between Reading, Slough and Heathrow - with a tunnel that passes through South Bucks - was not mentioned in a recent speech by Lord Andrew Adonis.

Lord Adonis is currently chairman of the National Infrastructure Commission, which is setting out the shortfalls in current UK infrastructure.

A statement from the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce said: “Many high-profile and important projects were mentioned including HS2, new electricity generating capacity, digital and broadband roll-out, Crossrail 2, HS3 and the new Thames crossing.

“However, the failure to mention the WRLtH has concerned the Chamber, its members and the wider business community in the Thames Valley.”

The Chamber’s CEO Paul Britton has written to Lord Adonis, following his call for the Government to ensure that Brexit and a hung parliament do not shelve ‘critical’ infrastructure projects.

Mr Britton said: “Lord Adonis echoes the long-held view of the Chamber that investment in infrastructure is a key component in delivering sustained levels of economic growth and wealth-creation.

“Proximity to the UK’s premier hub airport – London Heathrow – and investment in rail and road projects have all helped the Thames Valley become one of the most successful economic regions in Europe. Alarmingly there are some key projects of national importance that are missing from Lord Adonis’s list and we call on him, the National Infrastructure Commission and relevant Governmental offices to step up and ‘urgently progress’ the decisions to deliver these projects as well.”
