NEIL BAKER believes that Slough Town were the better side in the 2-2 friendly draw with Wealdstone at a rain-soaked Arbour Park on Tuesday.

Slough twice came from behind thanks to goals from striker Chris Flood and trialist Paul Hodges to back up the 0-0 draw with Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

The Rebels have deliberately organised a tough schedule of friendly matches and Baker is delighted with how his side have performed against higher-league opposition.

“I spoke with Gordon Bartlett [Wealdstone manager] who said that we were better than them and we were, we dominated most of the game,” Slough joint-boss Baker told the Observer.

“I thought they were probably better than us in the first 15 minutes, we went 1-0 down, but then we just got on top without really hurting them with a couple of long-range shots in the first half.

“In the second half, we really stepped it up and created lots of chances, and probably with one or two better decisions would have got ourselves in on goal a few more times.

“We should probably have won the game but that doesn’t really matter. There were lots of positive performances again so I’m delighted.”

He continued: “It was a completely different type of game to Wycombe. We knew that was going to be a defensive exercise.

“It took a little while for us to get into it on Tuesday, but once we did we kept the ball really well and dominated the vast majority of the game.

“Wealdstone were still dangerous because of the way we play, we do play quite open, but we were the better side and that’s another positive really.

“You don’t want to get beat in pre-season and the fact of the matter is we’ve not given ourselves an easy summer this year. We’re playing sides that are predominantly at a higher level than us, so it’s not a easy and you do sometimes worry are we setting ourselves up for a fall, but we’ve had two good performances which is the main thing.”

Slough welcome Tooting & Mitcham United to Arbour Park this Saturday (1pm) but will be without new signing Alan Inns after the experienced centre back picked up an injury in the draw with Wycombe.

Baker said: “Alan had to go to hospital for an x-ray just to double check to see if there was any break but there’s none.

“He has just aggravated an old injury actually and hopefully will only be two or three weeks. I would expect him to be fit for the start of the season.”
