TWO adventurous 10-year-old girls climbed Britain’s second highest mountain as part of a £2,500 fundraising effort in aid of our most famous children’s hospital.

Katie Goater, of Cippenham, climbed Mount Snowdon in North Wales for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Hospital (GOSH) as part of her efforts.

School friend Finley Watson, 10, who is in the same class at Cippenham Primary, also climbed Wales’ highest peak with Katie and Katie’s mum Marilyn on June 3.

The seeds for Katie’s charitable efforts were first sown when she heard that Great Ormond Street Hospital had treated her grandmother, Terri Evans, for a serious kidney condition as a child.

Mrs Goater, said: “There’s always been a special place in our hearts for Great Ormond Street Hospital.”

After hearing of her efforts making the 3,560ft climb the community rallied together in support, inspiring a range of similar charitable fundraisers and donations in aid of the hospital.

Bingo players from the Royal British Legion donated their winnings, Cippenham primary supported a cake sale and worshippers at St Andrew’s church also contributed. At Cippenham carnival, Katie also raised over £1,000 on stalls with friends and family.

In all, Katie’s collections stand at £2,550 – smashing her original goal of £1,000.

And Katie isn’t finished yet.

She is running the Royal Bank of Canada 5km Race for the Kids, in Hyde Park on Saturday, October 7, alongside her friend Amy Jones, 10, and Mrs Evans.

Katie had dreamed of climbing Snowdon since age six, but her mother told her that she couldn’t attempt it until she was 10.

Mrs Goater said: “She never forgot. Once she turned 10, she nagged and nagged until she could do it.”

Mrs Goater added: “We’re overwhelmed by the huge support we’ve had. We just wanted to say thank you to everybody who supported us, in every way.”

Katie and her mother will be visiting Great Ormond Street hospital in August for a tour, in which they will see all the items that the hospital has bought through their donations.
