MATTHEW Lench has opened his heart on the emotions he felt after scoring a hat-trick for Slough Town in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Lench, 25, scored three - the second a contender for Goal of the Round - as Slough thumped Gainsborough Trinity 6-0 in the first round tie at Northolme.

The midfielder, who signed from Hitchin Town in the summer, bagged his first senior hat-trick when The Rebels won 4-1 at Kidlington in the FA Trophy seven days earlier.

And, in a whirlwind week that also saw him feature on the BBC during the draw for the second round, Lench admits he could not be happier for the team and the town.

He told the Observer: “I expected a really hard game and it started out that way but, after we got the first two goals, we just got on top of them and didn’t let them back into the match.

“From then on we were just on top really and I couldn’t be happier. I mean we’re into the second round so what more could you ask for.

“Neil Baker (joint-manager) came down here to watch Gainsborough play and seemed to think it would be a tough game, which it was, but if we played our way and did the right things then we would come out on top.

“That was proven to be right and it was a brilliant performance from everyone, the whole team.”

Lench added: “Two hat-tricks in two games is something that will never happen again, but what a time and place for it to happen for a second time. It’s an incredible feeling and I couldn’t be happier personally.

“But I can’t say enough about how good the rest of this team were and have been. That’s really what this is about, it’s not about me or anything like that.

“We’ve had some really good performances but, with this being the FA Cup and on this stage, it has to go down as the best, especially as Gainsborough a team in the division above us.

“I’m just so happy for the team, management and everyone around Slough.”

He added: “The dream would be to play a Premier League club in the third round but what happens, happens. We’re happy to be here and we will play whoever we get.”
