DATCHET WAR Memorial has been in the spotlight due to its unusual depiction of a WW1 tank.
History website Heritage Calling drew attention to the monument, as only a handful of WW1 memorials depict tanks, despite the important impact they had on breaking the stalemate of WW1.
Datchet resident, Alison Crampin, has helped compile fascinating short biographies of all the men listed on the Datchet War Memorial.
Among them is a John Marcus de Paravicini, who died in the Battle of Cambrai, which was the first battle in which tanks saw widespread deployment.
Another researcher of the memorial, Janet Kennish, of Hove, said “We don’t know who the artist was, but JM de P’s father was on the Memorial committee, so a representation of a tank might have been his idea.”
