A spokesman for Grundon Waste Management has revealed more details of the fire that swept through the recycling centre Friday night.

He thanked the fire brigade for its quick response, saying: “One of our employees raised the alarm in line with our established safety procedures and immediately called the fire brigade who were on site quickly and brought the fire under control.

“It was contained within a small area dedicated for the sorting and storage of wood waste and the fire brigade remained on site to ensure there were no outstanding issues."

The spokesman said it is too early to speculate on the cause and confirmed investigations are ongoing as the company works with the fire brigade.

Fire crews from across the area fought the fire at the Grundon waste recycling plant in Lakeside Road, Colnbrook Friday night.

The call came at 10.40pm and crews from Langley, Slough, Windsor, Pangbourne, Crowthorne and Maidenhead Fire stations were sent to the scene, together with the Aerial Ladder Platform from Whitley Wood Fire Station.

They found a large fire involving approximately 60 tonnes of waste and were on the scene seven hours.

Firefighters worked with site staff to excavate the waste, before using five jets to extinguish the fire. They remained on scene to ensure the fire was fully extinguished before handing over to the site’s owners.
