EVERYONE has their own idea of what makes a ‘grand day out’ - especially the talented and enthusiastic villagers who took part in the Old Windsor Carnival procession on Saturday.
Some were celebrating a day at the cinema, some a day at the zoo or the circus. But the young ladies of the 3rd Old Windsor Brownies chose to commemorate the suffragettes - for whom a day out could mean imprisonment and brutal treatment.
Brown Owl Anna Burn took the opportunity to give Royal Borough mayor and mayoress Cllr Paul Lion and Laura Lion - who were judging the floats - a potted history lesson about the suffragettes.
Brownie Olivia Skinner, 10 said: “It was awful. They had a thing called the Cat and Mouse Act, which saw women released after they had starved themselves until they were well enough to be arrested again.”
An impressed Cllr and Mrs Lion picked the Brownies’ float as the best.
But there were happier examples of how to spend a day out.
The 7th Windsor (Old Windsor) Scout Group chose a day at the zoo as the theme for their float and were awarded second place.
