A cyclist has received a lifetime ban from taking part in any events organised by the company which runs the Windsor Triathlon - after a dangerous manoeuvre that caused a horse to gallop off in panic.

The Observer reported last month how a video released on Facebook showed the cyclist try to overtake a horse from the inside during the triathlon on June 17, scraping against its side and causing it gallop off in terror as its driver struggled to avoid a terrible accident.

The horse rider Jennifer Katherine claimed the cyclist did not stop and made a rude gesture as he rode off. She said other cyclists had also passed too close to her.

The company Human Race Events apologised and promised a full investigation.

This week a new statement from the company said: “We believe we have identified two individuals at fault, but we won’t be revealing further details or sharing their identities, as this is a police matter. One cyclist will receive a lifetime ban from all Human Race events, a second (who did come forward after the incident) will receive a 12 month ban from all of our events.

“As the investigations are still ongoing this is pending any further information or mitigating circumstances that may come to light in the future.

“We are liaising with British Triathlon, who will be responsible for taking their own actions.”

The company also says it is taking further action of its own. Ms Katherine said she only went out on her horse because she did not know the event was happening.

Human Race Events says it now plans to review its advance warning signage before future triathlons in Windsor.

It promises to improve the way participants in its events are educated, emphasising at pre-race briefings that the Highway Code must be followed.

The statement said: “We believe this mishap is a poor representation of the triathlon community. The vast majority of triathletes and cyclists do follow the rules and ride with due care towards others.”
