ANIMAL lovers in Slough are being warned not to forget about their pet's welfare during the heatwave.
Following the Department of Health issuing a Heatwave warning this week, Slough Borough Council"s Animal Warden Jackie Singer has given pet a owners a few tips for looking after their furry friends during extreme weather.
Keeping your animal cool:
- Make sure your animals have access to fresh water at all times
- Make sure your animal is able to move into shade and a well ventilated area
- Children"s plastic paddling pools are excellent doggy pools, however try to supervise these so as to avoid accidents
- Do not leave your animal shut into a car, caravan or conservatory - these heat up incredibly quickly, even on cloudy days
- If you do have to take a car journey with your animal make sure the destination is animal-friendly
- Animals can get sunburnt too, particularly light coloured animals, use pet-safe sunscreen
- Do not walk your dog during the day, walk him/her in the early morning or evening when it is cooler
- Do not walk your dog for miles, a short walk in high temperatures is hard work
Symptoms of Heatstroke:
- Excessive panting and lots of drooling
- A fast pulse
- Very red or purple gums
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Lack of coordination, seizures and collapsing
On average, the RSPCA receives more than 6,000 calls a year relating to animals, predominantly dogs, suffering from exposure to high temperatures.
Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 pet owners have a legal duty to care for their animals, which includes preventing suffering. Penalties are a fine of up to £20,000 and/or up to six months in prison.
