Ex-Cllr hit with £40k libel bill

A POLTICAL activist has been ordered to pay a hefty legal bill following two years of bitter dispute with Slough's prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate.

Former Slough Borough councillor for Britwell, Paul Janik, is now facing a crippling £40,000 bill after being told to pay Cllr Diana Coad £15,000 in damages and £25,000 in costs at a High Court hearing on Wednesday.

The outcome of the libel action against Mr Janik, now a member of the Slough Party, relates to leaflets that were circulated around the town accusing the Langley St Mary's councillor of electoral expense irregularities in the run up to the May 2007 local election.
