A NATIONAL bravery award has been given to a man who helped police detain a man armed with a samurai sword.

George Black, of Wentworth Avenue, Britwell, was awarded a Certificate of Commendation as part of the Association of Chief Police Officers" (ACPO) National Police Public Bravery Awards announced on Wednesday.

The award recognises his efforts on November 20, 2007 when he saw police chasing a man armed with the sword on Cippenham Lane. He took action by driving his car at the man and causing a distraction. The armed man attacked his car with the sword, giving police the opportunity to use captor spray and overpower him.

Mr Black said: 'It was a nice surprise. I did not know about the award until Friday. It is nice to be recognised. It is not a thing I do every day, it was just one of those situations. It was a bit scary but we all do something extraordinary sometimes.'

DC Terry Griffiths, officer in charge of the investigation said: 'His actions stopped people from getting hurt. It was an incredibly tense situation and his actions stopped the problem from escalating.'

Mr Black has previously been awarded a Thames Valley Police Chief Constables Commendation and a Safer Slough Award.

The offender pleaded guilty to affray, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon and was sentenced to 20 months in prison in May last year.
