Second pollution problem for Chalvey Ditch

A YELLOW fungus covered the surface of Chalvey Ditch after a fresh case of pollution.
A discharge of food effluent polluted Chalvey Ditch in December and the fungus grew because it used the effluent as a food source, smothering the stream bed for about 1,500 metres downstream before it reduced due to natural dilution.
The incident hampered the recovery of the Ditch and of Cippenham Pond which were badly polluted by liquid soap in September last year, killing thousands of fish and destroying the habitat for other animals.
In the latest incident, the source of the pollution was traced and stopped and investigations by the Environment Agency are ongoing. The agency is now at the enforcement stage regarding the first incident and more information will be available in about a month.
