A COUPLE in their 80s were nearly knocked down by a car in a snatch and grab theft which has been branded 'despicable' by police.

The incident, which took place in Langley at around 11.30am yesterday, left the elderly lady badly shaken after her handbag was ripped from her shoulder by the driver of a car which came from the direction of Mead Avenue before spinning around the frightened pair.

The thief, who reached out of the driver's window to steal the bag, then sped off towards Willoughby Road leaving behind the pensioners who had been making their way home following a visit to the nearby post office.

Investigating officer PC Martin Hegg said: "The lady, who is a retired tailor, was very shocked and upset by the incident. Her husband was also shaken up. He served as a soldier in the Scots Guards and was wounded while fighting in France during the Second World War.

"This is a despicable crime against an elderly victim who has lost items of sentimental value as well as money. I urge anyone who was in the Meadfield Road area between 11am and 12pm and may have witnessed this incident to contact the police so that we can bring the offender to justice."

Anyone with information should call police on 0845 8 505 505 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

What are these people on? What would make anyone think it was okay to steal from elderly people any way, but especially in this manner. I hope they catch the creeps and give them more than a slap on the wrist. What saddos.

Wonder how many crack dens are nearby? only a crack or heroin druggie would be vile enough to do this disgusting crime. druggies should be named and shamed just like s*x offenders.

remember gummy and what he did to that poor woman in langley when he ran her over with her own car? yea he had just left a crack den

british justice needs to be far harsher on criminals, maybe take a leaf out of the countries abroad.

you're right about drugs having a lot to do with crimes like this. even scarier though are the times when it has nothing to do with drugs and purely down to the fact that some people actually dont have a problem stealing from the elderly and/or vulnerable.
