Sainsbury's supermarket will soon become a reality
CONSTRUCTION workers finally knocked down an unsightly half built supermarket which has been plaguing the town's skyline for months.
A new Sainsbury's supermarket will soon become a reality, after demolition work began to knock down the skeleton of a ill fated supermarket in Uxbridge Road.
Bulldozers pulled down the existing structure, which was construed by previous owners Tesco before the site was sold to Sainsbury's in line with the Competition Commission investigation.
Once the ruble is cleared work will begin on the new Sainsbury's store from late March. It is expected to take nine months to complete and the store is expected to open before Christmas.
The new store will provide Sainsbury's food range, including fresh meat, fish, delicatessen and pizza counters, with a wide selection of kitchenware, homeware and the TU clothing range.
Sainsbury's development surveyor Ben Littman, said: ''We are delighted that work is underway to bring a new Sainsbury's to Slough. We look forward to offering fantastic food at fair prices in a high quality environment.''
Outline planning permission for the new store was granted by Slough Borough Council last year, when Sainsbury's was also confirmed as the approved purchaser of the site. This followed an investigation by the Competition Commission, which found that the when Tesco bought the site in 2003, this reduced competition in terms of customer choice in grocery shopping in Slough.

Report commentNo petrol station then? I was hoping we might we get one to introduce a bit of competition on pricing in the town. It always seems a bit silly getting money off petrol vouchers at the Sainsbury's in Farnham Road, when it is a trek to the nearest Sainsbury's petrol station (Hayes or Staines)

Report commentI'm dissapointed it wasn't sold to Morrisons, we need one in slough, the nearest being bracknell or wycombe when sainsburys are in maidenhead, taplow and farnham road.

Report commentThere is a Morrisons in Yiewsley too, although a relatively small and cramped store in the old Co-op building.
I share your frustration though Stu. A Morrisons would have been better for competition, which was surely the point of forcing Tesco to sell this site to a competitor

Report commenteither morrisons didnt put in a bid, or tescos chose to sell to sainsbury's because they would find fewer of their customers defecting to the new store. a tescos customer i think would be more enticed to shop at morrisons than a sainsburys customer. just because tesocs were forced to sell, im not sure that that meant that they were forced to sell to a particular competitor, so givent he choice i think over time financially it was always going to make more sense for them to sell to someone who would takew fewer of their customers. with the credit crunch people tend to trade 'down' a supermarket level rather than up - ie waitrose customers going to sainsburys or tescos, and tescos customers going to asda or morrisons.

Report commentI think if they had build morrisons there it would had been a tough competition for tesco. I would go to tesco and sainsburys both it depends on the prices and the quality of the products. I like tesco green apples when they are fresh

Report commentI can not wait! I love Sainsburys! Every time I 'compare the supermarket' they always come out cheaper than Tescos and Asda!!! Better quality and full shelves. Roll on the 24th ...
